A history of April fools day, played out by none other then the biggest fooler... Jane Winegar Wilcox....
around march of 1983 my dad was taking his final exams at the University of Utah. My mom knew how hard my dad had been studying, and how important this test was in order for him to pass and provide for their soon to be growing family. My father, suffers from a mild case of anxiety, don't we all when it come to test taking and the weight of our future hanging in the balance. My mom knew my dad was worried and the anxiety that built up in my dad, she also knew that often times this nervousness was relieved by having to go to the bathroom right before the big moment of truth. However, the test unfortunately landed on APRIL FOOLS and my mom couldn't let this perfect, once in a life time, alignment of the stars moment pass her by. while my dad busied himself studying she sewed the opening on his underwear shut and gingerly laid them on the top of the pile for him to wear the next day. Well, the big day arrived and just as planned my father went to take his test and just as predicted he had the sudden urge to rush, nay sprint, to the bathroom to relieve his bowels before the moment of truth, but alas, as he tugged and pulled to get his underwear open he found they had been daintily stitched shut by his supporting companion. my father almost missed his test, but my mothers glory and laughter at the moment (she didn't even get to witness) still rings on to this day. it's one of her cherished memories.
a few years down the road, I, her only daughter was starving my guts out as I tried to make it through the woes and difficulties of being a second grader. counting down the seconds until lunch I wearily stood in line with my classmates my teal my little pony lunch box feebly clutched in my wasting away hands. I made it to the lunch room, stomach growling and unclasped the lock ready for a delicious meal, only to find, the crust off of some wheat bread, the stems of some already eaten grapes, an empty bag of what should have been my dessert and nothing else. I was miserable, and what second grader is going to remember in their moment of hunger that it's APRIL FOOl's and their mom is living it up on her favorite day of the year! well I started crying told my friends to look at my pitiful lunch and went outside to sulk on the swings, and let the sun turn my ailing, lifeless body into dust. my mom, again was reigning high in her foolery and glory, met me on the swings laughing and all smiles. I again began to bawl as I asked her why I deserved such a miserable lunch, she handed me a perfectly packed lunch, in an ugly brown sack replaying only, APRIL FOOLS!
my mother is the queen of April fools. i think it might be her favorite holiday she is very good at catching everyone off guard year after year. you would think we would all be better at catching on or plotting something big to get her back but without fail every April 1st she's got a new unexpected joke up her sleeve that she slyly snaps you in her trap! there was one joke though that became tradition, even though through the years it long since became unbelievable. My mom would call my aunt Marianne every April fools to let her know she was expecting. however, one year she did this and without knowing she really was pregnant with TWINS! so the joke came back around and bit her in the bud! Making her the fool!
Unfortunately I didn't inherit my mothers skill, or determination to pull off an April fools joke. I've been so sick that most everyone already suspected something was miss with me. I wasn't radiating that motherly glow, more or less a barfy shade of green. While some already knew I had a little creature growing inside me, I decided to see if I could still trick those who didn't, and tailspin the ones that did. hence the picture of twins. YES I AM PREGNANT, that is not a April fools joke. BUT I'M NOT HAVING TWINS (phew, unless I jinxed myself like my mother and will soon become a fool like she!) I'm due NOVEMBER 13! I guess I'm not as sly as my mom and couldn't pull off the perfectly, alignment of the stars joke.
