since this is kind of a big number, we decided we better do more then the norm and SURPRISE him a little. he had warned us in years past to please not give him a party of any sorts when he turned 50. he DETESTS being the center of attention. but we find great joy in making our family members squirm, especially the ones we love the most, and so my mom in all her creative and genius ways decided to throw him a FAREWELL TO 49 PARTY. because he never specified about 49....
So on July 19th 5 days before the actual big big day we all gathered at my grandma wilcox's house for a "reunion thank you family party" and created the most excellent of shindigs. the only thing missing was the fireworks, but they'll be soon to follow.
my mom thought it would be fun to come up with 5o unknown facts about my dad. it worked out pretty good and we ended up decorating my grandma's tree's with them!! it was surprising to find out some random things about my dad. once everyone had read all random 50 facts they were to sign an awesome framed photo of my dad. I wish I had a copy of the picture cause it's pretty stylin!then came the big moment! we got our voices and cheers ready!!! and boy did he love the fanfare....NOT!!!
I asked my dad if he knew and he admitted he did. he didn't know when and where it would happen but you can't be married to my mom for 28 years and not know she's got something tricky up her sleeve. and it doesn't help that she and my two brothers have a little trouble keeping things under wraps!!!
the party was a success even if the surprise wasn't! we're glad everyone could come and celebrate the first 50 years of David Lee Wilcox's life!!!! my mom asked everyone to send my dad birthday cards all throughout the month so he's gotten about 60 funny cards and old man gifts.
